PEDRO — For six innings, it was a baseball good game. For one inning, it was a good football game.

Rock Hill and Portsmouth Notre Dame combined for 17 runs in one inning, but the Redmen held the upper hand in the other six as they beat Notre Dame 17-9 Tuesday.

“If you take away the one big inning when everybody just hit the ball, it was a good game. The pitching wasn’t that bad,” Redmen coach Barry Litteral said.

‘But we need to get more consistent with our pitching. It needs to be better as a whole, and we need to come out and take care of business throughout the whole ball game.”

Rock Hill (2-0) went in front 8-1 before the wild fifth inning.

In the first, Corey Burke doubled and Seth Kuehne singled for a run. After Kuehne stole second, Mark DePriest was safe on a fielder’s choice and Zach Zornes had a two-run double.

Two more runs scored in the third inning to make it 5-0.

J.C. Murnahan singled, Carl Blankenship and DePriest walked, and Zornes and Nathan Davenport had RBI singles.

Notre Dame got a run in the top of the fourth, but Rock Hill came right back with three more in the bottom of the inning.

Burke and Keuhne walked, Murnahan was safe on a fielder’s choice and Blankenship hit a sacrifice fly. The Redmen pulled off a double steal and Zornes had a two-run single.

Notre Dame had eight straight hits in scoring eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-8 lead

But the Redmen had nine hits as they answered with nine runs in the bottom of the inning. Murnahan had a two-run triple, DePriest had an RBI double and Zornes delivered a run-scoring single to highlight the uprising.

Zornes was 4-5 and Burke was 3-4 as Rock Hill had 18 hits.
