Watkins Memorial may have been the winner of the 53rd Ironton Invitational, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of Ironton coach Greg Cronacher.

Watkins had 143.5 points to easily take first place. The rest of the field was fairly competitive with South Point taking the runners-up trophy followed by Wheelersburg with 87, Fairland 84.5, Ironton fifth with 74 points, Chesapeake 54.5, South Webster 54, Rock Hill 33 and Jackson 24.

“I was pleased. We had some good performances and we didn’t even have everyone in all their events,” Cronacher said. “Once we get everyone where they belong and get in shape, we’re going to be okay.”

South Point flexed its muscles as a team to contend with in the area. Chris Smith led the way with wins in the shot put (54-3.5) and discus (150-11).

Also taking first place for South Point was Zach Norris in the pole vault at 11-6 and Quay Logan in the long jump (18-11.75). Teammate Drew Lynd was second in the long jump (18-10).

Ironton’s Lukas Morris upset Logan in the high jump with a personal-best leap of 6-3. Marc Carter coasted to a win in the 800 at 2:05.4. John Pemberton was second in the shot (53-3) and third in the discus. Freshman Jon Monnig tied for third in the pole vault at 11-feet.

Ironton’s 4×400 relay team of Tym Vandermosten, Major Brice, Dustin Green and Carter was second with a 3:41.3 clocking.

Chesapeake’s Kenny Morgan won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.4 seconds. Craig Stamper of Wheelersburg ran an 11.6 to take second but beat Morgan in the 200 meters with a time of 23.6 seconds, three-tenths better than Morgan.

Chesapeake’s Tyler Cravens was second in the 800.

Fairland got four second-place finishes as Chuckie Wentz ran a 4:48.4 in the 1600 and a 10:43.1 in the 3200 while Aaron Ward ran a 43.6 time in the 300 hurdles and 15.9 in the 110 hurdles.

Rock Hill’s 4×100 relay team ran a 46.6 to take first place.
