WHEELERSBURG — The Ironton Fighting Tigers gave the Wheelersburg Pirates the runaround.

Around the bases, that is.

Ironton parlayed seven hits, six walks and five errors into a 12-5 win over the Wheelersburg Pirates Thursday.

“We just ran the bases well,” Ironton coach Tobey Schreck said. “We did a good job getting people on base and moving them around the bases and keeping the pressure on their defense.

Chad Miller, who was 2-4 at the plate, went the distance to get the win. He struck out 11, walked three and allowed seven hits.

“Chad pitched a nice game and stayed ahead of the hitters. We kind of turned the tables on someone. Usually we’re the ones making the errors and getting behind in the count,” Schreck said.

Dustin Cook was the loser. He struggled with control as he walked six, but only five of the runs were earned.

The Pirates (18-3) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a hit by Wes Lyon and an error.

Ironton (8-9) tied the game in the second inning on hit by Jeremy Moore and walks to Byron Brammer, Alfred Parece and Miller.

The Fighting Tigers blew the game open with seven runs in the third inning.

With one out, Nick Lewis walked, Moore each on an error and David Bridges walked to load the bases. Brammer singled for a run, Josh Pancake was hit by a pitch for an RBI, and Alfred Parece reached on a fielder’s choice for another.

Miller singed in a run and T.J. Keith grounded out as the final run scored.

Ironton scored four runs in the fifth inning to make it 12-1.

Pancak singled, Parece was safe on an error and Miller had a two-run single. Keith reached on an error as a run scored and he came home when Tanner Reed grounded out.

The Pirates got three runs in the bottom of the inning on a walk to Andrew Elliott, a single by Daniel Armstrong, and doubles by Adam Wamsley and Bryan White.

Wheelersburg’s final run scored in the seventh on a walk to Wes Lyon, a hit by Wamsley and a ground out by White.

Ironton hosts Jackson Friday.
