HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Spring football can mean different things to different people.

To Marshall Thundering Herd football players Darius Lewis and Patrick Kouns, spring means opportunity.

The former Ironton Fighting Tigers are using this spring to impress head coach Mark Snyder and try to move up the depth charts after being redshirted last season.

“Darius is showing some flashes and some maturity,” said Snyder. “He’s starting to show some of the things he did at Ironton which is why we recruited him.”

The 5-foot-10, 220-pound Lewis has shown some powerful running this spring. Several times in drills he has run over tacklers.

“I’m having fun. I’m strong and I feel good. I’m just going to go hard and take advantage of my opportunities,” said Lewis.

Kouns signed with the University of Charleston out of high school but transferred to Marshall after one season.

“I’m having fun. I’m just happy to be here,” said Kouns, a 6-foot-2, 235-pound tight end.

“There’s a lot to learn. You have to learn to block three different ways on one play. But I’m using this spring to learn. I’ll get it.”

Kouns understands he’s playing behind All-Conference USA tight end Cody Slate.

“I’d like to play, but I’d be happy to play special teams,” said Kouns.

Snyder has been pleased with the work ethic and attitude of Kouns.

“Patrick is learning and doing well. He’s a hard worker,” said Snyder.
