ROME TOWNSHIP — Megan Auxier is not a one-man team. But that doesn’t stop her from trying.

Auxier pitched a five-hitter and drove in all three runs as the Fairland Lady Dragons nipped the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 3-2 Friday in the Division III sectional finals.

“Megan Auxier led us on the mound and also at the plate. She came up big for us,” said Fairland coach Leroy Baise.

“Both teams played a great game. A hit here or a hit there or a mistake can cost you a ball game.”

Fairland (16-9) plays Zane Trace at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the district semifinals at the University of Rio Grande.

Fairland went in front 1-0 in the first inning when Megan Brooks walked, stole second base, took third on a passed ball, and came home on a bunt single by Auxier.

The lead went to 2-0 in the third inning on a one-out solo home run by Auxier.

Chesapeake got within 2-1 in the fourth inning.

Shelby Pike was hit by pitch, Brea Ratcliff walked and a throwing error rolled to the fence allowing Pike to score.

The Lady Dragons got what proved to be the winning run in the fifth inning.

Brooks singled, moved up on a passed ball, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sara Simms, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Auxier.

The Lady Panthers got a run back in the sixth inning.

Ratcliff reached on an error, took second on a passed ball, Courtney Heffner walked, and Ratcliff stole third. Hannah Henderson grounded out as the run scored.

Chesapeake threatened in the seventh only to come up short.

Casey Kirk singled and Cati McCalllister walked with two outs, but Auxier struck out the next batter to end the game.

Auxier got the win while Allison Chapman took the hard-luck loss despite nine strikeouts, two walks and allowing only four hits.
