Blackburn no-hits Elliott County again

Caleb Blackburn does good work. Too good as far as the Elliott County Lions are concerned.

For the second time this season, the St. Joseph Flyers sophomore righthander pitched a five-inning no-hitter and the Flyers beat the Lions 11-0 Monday.

“He was throwing really hard and his curveball was breaking. When he’s got both pitches working, he’s hard to hit,” said Flyers coach Greg Bryant.

Blackburn struck out 10 and walked one as he threw just 69 pitches. When Blackburn won the first meeting — also by an 11-0 score — he struck out 11 and walked two.

The Flyers had 10 hits as they improved to 14-2 on the season.

Ryan Waginger led the offense as he went 3-3 with a home run. Cory Lewis and Blackburn each went 2-3 with a home run.

“It was nice to keep hitting the ball. We need to focus the next week and a half and get some momentum going. We’re getting production up and down the lineup,” Bryant said.

“Joe Unger has stepped in and is playing good defense and contributing offensively with Tre Stambaugh hurt.”

The Flyers got all the runs they needed in the first inning when Blackburn hit a home run after Ryan Schwab singled.

St. Joseph got five runs in the third inning and it was 7-0.

Pat Gagai and Jerrod Laber walked and Lewis followed with a home run. Waginger made it back-to-back with a solo home run.

Chad Harvey then reached on an error, stole second and third, and came home on a sacrifice fly by Michael Basedow.

Four more runs came across in the fourth inning.

Harvey reached on an error again, Laber singled to put runners on the corner and then he stole second base. Blackburn and Lewis each singled in runs.

Pinch-runner Anthony Whaley moved up on a wild pitch and Waginger had a run-scoring single. Harvey capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

St. Joseph plays at Coal Grove Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
