There’s a reason or reasons when something good happens. Just ask the St. Joseph Flyers.

The Flyers enjoyed their best season in 25 years as they racked up an 18-5 record, were ranked fifth in the final coaches’ Division IV poll, and reached the district finals for the first time since 1982.

One of the reasons for the great season was Ryan Waginger, a pitcher and first baseman who was named second team All-Ohio by the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches’ Association.

“He had a great season. He put up some really good numbers for us,” said Flyers coach Greg Bryant.

Waginger posted his best career pitching record as he went 9-2 with an impressive 1.19 earned run average.

In 64.2 innings of work, the senior left-hander gave us 57 hits, struck out 42 and walked only 18.

“He threw the best he’s thrown, especially in big games,” said Bryant. “He was our ‘go-to guy.’”

On the offensive end, the first team all-district player had a .342 batting average with two home runs, 15 runs batted in, a .400 on-base percentage and .452 slugging percentage.

“He got off to a slow start but came on when we needed him,” Bryant said.
