Dragons, SP girls fall

BELPRE — When the wheels fell off, there was a loud thud.

The Fairland Dragons were leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning. But the Belpre Eagles scored four times in the third and kept on scoring to take a 9-1 win Friday in the Division III sectional finals.

Nate Watson pitched a five-hitter for the Eagles who had 10 hits off four Fairland pitchers.

The Dragons got their only run in the second inning on a suicide squeeze bunt, but two walks, a balk, a hit off the first baseman and a sacrifice fly by Sean Haverty gave Belpe a 4-1 lead.

Mike Waderker hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning as the lead went to 7-1.

Ethan Long was 2-3 to lead Fairland (15-7) at the plate.

WELLSTON — Now, that’s a sectional championship game.

The Wellston Lady Golden Rockets squeaked out a 1-0 win over the South Point Lady Pointers Friday in the Division III sectional finals.

Wellston got the game’s only run in the third inning.

Paige Patterson walked to start the inning and moved to second on a fly out to centerfield. After Huron struck out the next batter, Stephanie Trainer got a base hit to left-center to scored Patterson.

South Point left six runners on base including the bases loaded in the fifth innings.

The Lady Pointers also stranded runners at second base in the fourth and sixth innings while another runner was cut down trying to steal third base in the third inning.

Ashley Kleinman was 2-3 and Tausha Collins had a hit for the Lady Pointers who were limited to just three hits by Erin Sturgill.

South Point ends the season 10-13. Wellston is now 21-3.
