Errors cost CG again

PORTSMOUTH — The Coal Grove Hornets have seen this before, and they weren’t happy to see it again.

The Hornets were guilty of six errors as they dropped a 12-2 decision in six innings to the Portsmouth Trojans Tuesday in the Division III sectional tournament.

“They hit the ball, but we gave them the extra outs to do it,” said Hornets coach John Jones. “That’s been the story of our games this season. If we have more than two errors, we lose.”

An example of the Hornets defensive woes came in the first inning when Portsmouth (14-12) scored four times.

John Harcha singled, but with one out John Walker reached on an error and Howard Harcha singled to load the bases. After strikeout that should have been the third out, Aaron Lacey was hit by a pitch. Cody Colley reached on an error for another run and Shane Porter singled home two runs.

The Hornets got their two runs in the second inning.

Taylor Dean singled and Wayne Sparks had a two-out base hit. The rightfielder bobbled the ball allowing Dean to score and send Sparks to second base. Ryan Ramey followed with a run-scoring single and it was 4-2.

Zach Murphy was 2-3 as Coal Grove had just five hits.

Coal Grove finishes the season 11-16.
