PROCTORVILLE — Fans recognize Megan Auxier when she takes the mound for the Fairland Lady Dragons.

But not even Auxier may recognize the players behind her.

Auxier is the only senior and Fairland had just two juniors as they try to defend the Ohio Valley Conference championship of last season.

“We’re young and new. Some of these players have several years of ASA experience, but that’s different. We’re finding that out,” Fairland coach Leroy Baise said.

Fortunately, Auxier is back. She was 21-2 record last season.

She will be joined in the starting lineup by junior second baseman Beth Schlegel and sophomore MacKenzie Rucker.

“Megan and MacKenzie lead us. This year’s team has speed, but the big thing is the inexperience. We don’t have the experience of playing together and playing positions they’re not used to. We just have to learn to play together and not make mistakes,” said Baise.

“Schlegel is a smart player. She doesn’t beat you with mistakes.”

At first base will be Whitney Boster and Kirstyn Midkiff.

While Schlegel has moved form the outfield to second base, Megan Brooks is at shortstop while Sara Simms takes over at third base.

From left to right in the outfield will be Kira Dillon, Shelby Fuller and Jordan Fulks.

“Defensively, we can make the plays. We just have to know our limits of what we can do and what we can’t. We can’t try to do more than we’re capable,” said Baise.
