Fighting Tigers#8217; tennis team drops heartbreaker to Pirates

It was a tennis match that resembled an epic prize fight.

Seeing revenge from its only loss of the season, Ironton’s tennis team went toe-to-toe with the Wheelersburg Pirates and it came down to the final set.

With the match tied at 2-2, the final doubles set went to the very end with Wheelersburg winning the tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6). Ironton’s Demetrius Givens and Seth Christian won the first set 6-3 before losing 6-2.

In the other doubles match, Ironton’s Rob Downs and Austin Cornett lost to Dillon MacDonald and Trevor Miller 2-6, 7-5, 4-6.

In singles play, Ironton’s Lovell Medcalf remained unbeaten with a tough 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (6-8), 6-4 win over over Chad Pierron.

J.C. Kinney fell to the Pirates Tyler Adams 1-6, 0-6 but Ironton’s Joey Pauley came back to beat Nik Roe of Wheelersburg 7-6 (6-4), 6-3.

In junior varsity actin, Ironton’s Cody Quillen lost to Joe Park 0-8 while Gage Murphy and Lorenzo Akers fell to the Pirates Parth Patel and Cole Miller 6-8.

Ironton, 7-2 but 3-0 in the SEOAL, plays at Russell, Ky., on Monday, visits Chllicothe on Tuesday and Gallipolis Wednesday, then hosts Gallipolis on Thursday.
