Flyers win doubleheader

SOUTH SHORE, Ky. — It was almost like you could hear a disc jockey saying, “And the hits just keep on coming.”

The hits just kept coming for the St. Joseph Flyers who had 33 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Harvest Christian Saturday.

St. Joseph (13-2) had 15 hits in an 18-6 win in the first game, then came back with 18 hits in a 19-10 win.

“We hit the ball well all day long. We hit a lot of line drives,” said Flyers coach Greg Bryant.

“(Ryan) Schwab pitched well the first game and they only had one earned run in the second game off Caleb (Blackburn) and Ryan (Waginger).”

In the first game, Chad Harvey went hit for the cycle as he went 4-4. Michael Basedow was 3-4 with Pat Gagai and Schwab 2-4.

The Flyers scored three runs in the first inning.

Schwab doubled, stole third base and Gagai hit a sacrifice fly. Jerrod Laber was safe on an error and Harvey homered.

The lead went to 4-0 in the top of the second inning when Basedow was safe on an error, stole second and came home on a hit by Joe “The Shoe” Unger.

After Harvest Christian got a run in the bottom of the inning, the Flyers a run back in the third.

Laber singled, stole second, moved to third on a fly out and scored when Harvey singled.

Harvest got a run in the bottom of the inning and neither team scored in the fourth, but St. Joseph got two runs in the fifth.

Laber walked, stole second, and Harvey doubled. Harvey stole third base and came home on a throwing error.

Harvest Christian scored in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-3, but St. Joseph erupts for 11 runs in the sixth on eight hits, three walks and two hit batsmen.

Harvey had an RBI triple, Gagai and Basedow got two hits each while Dillon Klein, Greg Pina and Schwab all had hits.

In the second game, the Flyers fell behind 9-7 before a big six-run fifth inning decided the outcome.

Laber had an RBI double to give the Flyers a 10-9 lead and then Caleb Blackburn and Harvey added run-scoring singles.

Laber and Blackburn were 3-4, Waginger 3-5, Basedow 2-3 and Gagai 2-4 as the Flyers got 18 hits.

St. Joseph hosts Elliott County (Ky.) at 7 p.m. Monday.
