The Friends of Ironton is continuing one of its long-standing beautification projects and is hoping to find more people to jump on board.

For three years, the civic organization has bought new stop signs to replace old ones throughout the city.

On June 26 at 7 p.m., the group will meet at the Ironton City Center and break into groups to put up stop signs. The goal is to install about 50 new signs, said Rick Jansen, one of the organizers of the group.

“It is something that helps the appearance of the city. It projects a bad image and it can be a safety hazard because they (signs) are faded,” Jansen said.

The group is footing the bill for the signs, which cost about $30 each.

When the project started, Jansen said the group identified 177 signs that needed replaced in the city. After the latest round of installation, Jansen said there will be about 77 that need to be replaced.

The Friends of Ironton began installing signs in the south end of town and has worked its way to the central part, including the heavily traveled Park Avenue area.

The group is also trying to recruit more help from the public and business community for its annual Rally on the River. There will be a meeting to discuss the event at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ironton City Center.
