UPPER TOWNSHIP— One of two children who were victims of apparent drug overdoses has been released from a local hospital.

Michael Reeves, spokesman for King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky., said a 14-year-old girl was treated and released.

The 13-year-old boy taken by helicopter to Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., remains hospitalized, spokeswoman Kathy Cosco said. The Ironton Tribune has opted not to publish the children’s names.

The boy was found unconscious, lying in or near the pavement along County Road 180 Tuesday morning by neighbors. The girl was found inside her residence.

Authorities said the boy apparently spent the night at the girl’s home, and the two of them had taken medication belonging to the girl’s mother, Debbie Newcomb, after Newcomb went to bed.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jeff Lawless said all information from the investigation will be forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office for review and to determine of any charges will be filed against Newcomb.

Lawless said the other children who were living at the Debbie Newcomb residence have been placed with other family members.
