COAL GROVE — You can call it football. The Coal Grove Hornets like to call it “keep away.”

The Hornets ran 51 plays to just 35 for Fairview as they routed the Eagles 30-12 Friday.

“We just play hard-nosed ball and we play ball control,” Hornets coach Dave Lucas said.

Running back Trent Blankenship carried the ball as many times as Fairview ran a play as he gained 229 yards and scored two touchdowns. It was his second straight 200-yard game.

Coal Grove (2-0) amassed 362 total yards while Fairview had 214. However, 86 yards came on a pass play against the second team.

“Our defense did a great job again. Fairview had two good backs,” Lucas said. “Blankenship ran hard, but the line also played great as well.”

In a replay of last week’s win over Lawrence County, Ky., Coal Grove fell behind early but rallied to win.

A 26-yard run by quarterback Daniel Armstrong trigged a 64-yard drive for Faiview. Danny Stewart scored on a 13-yard run and it was 6-0.

Coal Grove came back with a touchdown on its first possession to ignite 30 unanswered points.

The Hornets went 62 yards in seven plays capped by Blankenship’s 17-yard scoring run. Neil Taylor kicked the conversion and the Hornets went up 7-6.

“We responded well after the first drive. A sign of a good team is when you can come back from adversity like we did,” Lucas said.

Matt Cooper got loose on a 47-yard run with 8:15 left in the half that extended the lead to 14-6.

A 21-yard run by Blankenship got the Hornets deep into Fairview territory.

Five plays later and time running out, Taylor booted a 28-yard field goal and it was 17-6 at the half.

Coal Grove opened the second half with a nine-play drive that culminated on a 15-yard run by Blankenship and it was 23-6.

A 6-yard scoring pass from Eric Davidson to Marty Holston capped a time-consuming 87-yard, 16-play drive ended Coal Grove’s scoring.

Fairview (1-2) scored on the final play of the game on an 86-yard pass from Armstrong to Casey Clark.
