Ironton will play for tennis title

It’s title time.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers tennis team swept the Chillicothe Cavaliers 5-0 Wednesday to set up a match Thursday for the Southeastern Ohio Athletic League title.

Ironton hosts North Division champion Athens at 4:30 p.m.

Lovell Medcalf remained unbeaten on the season at 15-0 with a blitz of Jon Lods by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Rob Downs won the No. 2 singled match 6-2, 6-0 over Tim Unger and J.C. Kinney took the other singles match 6-1, 6-2 over Andy Clark.

In doubles play, Austin Cornett and Demetrius Givens beat Luke Wagner and Chris Unger of Chillicothe 6-2, 6-0, and the Ironton tandem of Joey Pauley and Seth Christian downed Daniel Axe and David Axe 6-0, 6-1.

In junior varsity action, Matt Jones and Lorenzo Akers were leading 5-4 over Jack Anthony and Tim Unger when the match was called due to bad weather.

Ironton’s Cody Quillen lost to Luke Unger 2-6.

Ironton is now 11-4 overall and finishes tied with Gallipolis in the South Division standings at 7-1.

Ironton won the division title based on the tiebreaker that has the Fighting Tigers winning more matches

against Gallipolis.
