CROWN CITY – It’s the little things that mean a lot. Do they ever.

The St. Joseph Flyers didn’t do the little things and it cost them a 5-4 loss Monday at the hands of the South Gallia Rebels.

“The pitching was okay, we just didn’t do the little things,” said Flyers coach Greg Bryant. “We just didn’t get the clutch hits. We left six guys in scoring position.”

The Flyers got on the scoreboard first in the second inning when Caleb Blackburn doubled, Ryan Waginger walked and Pat Gagai and Michael Basedow singled.

The lead went to 2-0 in the third inning.

Ryan Schwab and Chad Harvey singled to put runners on the corners and Blackburn had a sacrifice fly.

South Gallia came back to score three runs in the bottom inning.

Justin Shelton and Vance Fellure walked and Brody Green reached on an error to score a run. Steven Craig followed with a two-run single.

“We put some guys on with walks and then we made an error. Any time you put runners on base, you can’t make mistakes or it’ll come back to haunt you,” said Bryant.

St. Joseph tied the game in the fourth when Gagai and Basedow walked, moved up on a double steal and the run scored when Tre Stambaugh grounded out.

The Rebels went up 4-3 in the fifth inning.

Fellure walked, stole second and came home when Steven Craig singled.

The Flyers came right back in the top of the sixth to tie the game.

Gagai walked, stole second and third bases, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Stambaugh.

But South Gallia came right back with the winning run in the bottom of the inning.

Cory Small walked with one out and scored when Shelton’s base hit got past the Flyers outfielder for a two-base error.

St. Joseph (9-2) hosts Tolsia, W.Va., Tuesday.

The Heroes clawed their way back into the game as Damron connected with James Hawkins on a 22-yard pass for another touchdown. Hawkins was able to run over a defender and go in standing for his only touchdown reception of the night.

Adam Jones added a rouge point on the ensuing kickoff, and Damron threw his third touchdown pass of the game to Clark again to put the Heroes up 27-21 going into the half.

Huntington was able to take control of the second half as the offense behind the blocking of the offensive line and running back Donte Newsome helped set the tone for the rest of the game.

“I feel like we’re getting better offensively,” said McPeek. “Our offense line is gelling together well.”

Newsome had another career night, as he rushed for 60 yards on 10 carries and totaled four touchdowns. Newsome owed a lot of his success to the guys up front.

“They block for me and I score touchdowns like always,” Newsome said.

The Heroes defense came up big again as they forced pressure on Dinkins all night long, never letting him have time to scramble out of trouble.

Heroes defensive lineman, Jamus Martin tallied three tackles and two sacks on the night. Martin is leads the league in sacks.

Gerald Clark led the Heroes in receiving with seven receptions for 93 yards and 3 touchdown receptions.

Shane Holsinger finished the night with five receptions for 56 yards.

Holsinger, like the rest of his teammates felt the offense has started to come around.

“We’re on a roll right now,” said Holsinger. “Sometimes it takes time, but we’re clicking now.”

The Heroes (6-3) are on the road this week as they travel to face the Danville (IL) Demolition this Saturday night.

After a bye week, they will return home for their final home stand of the season as they face the Demolition again May 12.
