GALLIPOLIS — Instead of a “Win One for the Gipper,” game, it was a “Win One for Rockne.”

Ironton coach Missy Fields missed Wednesday’s Southeastern Ohio Athletic League game against first place Gallipolis to attend to her ailing father, Paul Houston.

In her absence, the Ironton seniors decided to dedicate the game to Fields and the Lady Tigers came through with a 6-2 upset of the Blue Angels.

“The kids played within themselves,” said Ironton assistant coach Jim Dyer. “They maintained their poise and showed the traditional Ironton pride.”

Ironton is now 5-2 in the SEOAL South and 5-7 overall. Gallipolis fell to 9-6 and 8-1 in the SEOAL South.

In the third inning, Kelsey Bronson singled and Nikki Harbolt and Emily Lilly followed with RBI doubles and it was 2-0.

The lead went to 3-0 in the third inning when Edi Taylor walked, stole second and third, and scored on a hit by Bronson.

Gallipolis got a run back in the bottom of the inning, but Ironton scored in the fifth.

Janie Morris singled, moved up on a fielder’s choice and scored on a hit by Jordan Scott.

The Blue Angels scored in the bottom of the inning, but Ironton added two insurance runs in the sixth.

Taylor walked and Bronson was hit by a pitch. After a double steal, Lilly had a two-run single.
