Lake Vesuvius fishing derby set for Saturday

In celebration of National Kids Fishing Month, the Wayne National Forest is hosting a day of fishing for kids and their families.

The derby is scheduled Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Every child fishing at the derby will receive free items provided by the event’s local and national sponsors.

Besides the free fishing, the day will also feature food and beverage, prizes, and contests, including a casting contest.

Youngsters are encouraged to pre-register at the Wayne National Forest office, located on State Route 93, or by calling the office at (740) 534-6500.

Participants can also register on the day of the derby beginning at 9:30 a.m.

All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The Lake Vesuvius Kid’s fishing derby is sponsored locally by the Lawrence County Bass Club, the Issak Walton League, the Wayne National Forest, Ohio University Southern Nature Center, Vic’s Bait-Tackle of Hanging Rock, The Tackle Box of Ironton, C&C Grocery of Arabia, Heiners Bakery of Huntington, 7-Up Bottling Company of South Point and Wal-Mart of Ashland.

Kids All-American Fishing, celebrating its 20th anniversary, is produced on a national level thanks to marquee sponsors Wal-Mart and Zebco along with Castrol, Coppertone, Eagle Claw, FLW Outdoors, Fujifilm and Laker Fishing.
