COLUMBUS — South Point sophomore high jumper Quay Logan is hard to please.

Heavy rains and lightening delayed the start of the Division II field events and made footing slippery. But Logan overcame the conditions to jump 6-foot-5 and win the Division II state high jump championship Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Despite the championship, Logan had a twinge of unhappiness.

“I can’t say I’m not happy, but I’m not proud of it. With the conditions and rain, I’m satisfied,” said Logan.

Ryan Fleck of Napoleon had cleared 6-10 this season and loomed as one of the favorites to win the event along with Logan who also jumped 6-10 this season.

But Fleck went out of the competition early as he cleared just 6-foot.

Logan had his problems, too, as he cleared 6-4 on his third attempt. He was the only jumper to go over the bar at 6-5 as he made the height on his second jump.

“I just came in trying to jump my best. I was tied with Ryan Fleck at 6-10 for the best height in the state, so when he went out I was pretty confident,” said Logan.

The improved heights cleared this season were due to added practice time, Logan said.

“I stayed away from basketball and it helped,” Logan said.

Even with the extra practice time, Logan didn’t expect to win the state championship in the event.

“It was always a goal, but I just wanted to place,” said Logan.

“It was just one of my goals to get in the state meet. I like bringing (the title) back to South Point. Going back and winning again is my next goal.”

Logan also competed in the long jump Friday and leaped 20-9 and one-half inches to place ninth. Drew Frey of Clinton Massie won a 23-7.5 jump.
