Pitching, home runs spark St. Joseph win

Caleb Blackburn didn’t want to give up even the smallest of hits. His teammates did nothing but get the longest of hits.

After throwing a five-inning no-hitter last week, Caleb Blackburn followed that performance with a one-hitter Monday as the St. Joseph Flyers blanked Harvest Christian 11-0.

The Flyers backed his pitching with 10 hits including four home runs in the same inning.

“Caleb didn’t throw a lot of pitches so we let him throw a little longer than we had planned. I was happy that we hit the ball well up and down the lineup,” said Flyers coach Greg Bryant.

“We just need to play to get better. We’ve been sitting around for four or five days, so it was good to be back on the field.”

The home run barrage came in the third inning as St. Joseph scored eight times to break the game open.

With the Flyers leading 2-0, Cory Lewis reached on an error and Blackburn belted a two-run homer. Jerrod Laber, Ryan Waginger and Chad Harvey then followed with consecutive home runs.

After the home runs, Michael Basedow walked, Pat Gagai put down a sacrifice bunt and Ryan Schwab had an RBI single.

Tre Stambaugh was safe on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on a hit by Lewis. Blackburn reached on another error and Laber drilled a double to score pinch-runner Dylan Klein to cap the rally.

The Flyers got a run in the first inning when Schwab walked, stole second base, took third on a wild pitch and came home on an error.

The lead went to 2-0 in the second as Laber, Harvey, Basedow and Gagai walked.

The final run scored in the fourth inning when Reid Smith walked and Gagai and Schwab had back-to-back singles.

St. Joseph, 5-1, hosts Coal Grove at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Ironton Senior League Field.
