PEDRO — As runners and throwers were getting records, the South Point Pointers were getting points.

Using strong performances in the field events, the Pointers won their fourth straight OVC track championship Friday.

The key for the Pointers was racking up 73 points in the field events led by Quay Logan who set two meet records. South Point had 154 points with runner-up Fairland at 119.

“I thought it was going to be a tight meet. I never expected to score that many points. But our fields events really stepped it up,” said Pointers coach Randy Smith.

“We didn’t win a lot, but we scored a lot.”

Logan leaped 21-0.25 to win the long jump and cleared 6-10 in the high jump, both new OVC meet records.

“Quay had 7-foot and just missed. He’s just a sophomore, so who knows what he can do,” said coach Smith. “The guy who gets lost is our other sophomore Drew Lynd because he’s in the same event.”

The Pointers also got a win in the pole vault as Zach Norris cleared 12-3 and Chris Smith claimed the discus at 156-2.

However, Coal Grove’s Tyler Branch won the shot put with a new meet and school record of 58-6.25.

Fairland distance runner Chuckie Wentz came away with the meet’s high point honors as he won three events and was on the wining 4×800 relay team with Chad Gibson, Matt Bloomfield and Eddie Adkins to rack up 32.5 points.

Wentz also won the 800-, 1600-, and 3200-meter runs.

Rock Hill’s Josh Moore won the 100-meter dash and teammate Wes Pierson took first in the 110-meter hurdles. Moore, Pierson, and brothers Jarrod and Justin Casey won the 4×100 relay.

Chesapeake’s Adam Slone was the 400-meter champion and Kenny Morgan won the 400 meters.

Slone and Morgan joined Tyler Cravens and Jon Greene to win the 4×400 relay.

South Point’s Josh Jones won the 300-meter hurdles. Norris, Josh Jones, Lynd and Steven Fairchild took first place in the 4×200 relay.
