SOUTH POINT – Maybe the wheels aren’t falling off, but there are a few flat tires and a need to replace the shocks.

Fairland was looking to end its four-game losing streak, but five strong innings weren’t enough.

South Point proved why it is leading the Ohio Valley Conference race with a 10-4 win over the Dragons Monday.

“We played well for five innings, but then we started making mistakes the last few innings. We competed well, it just fell apart on us,” Fairland coach Roger Snyder said. “We’re just making silly mistakes.”

The win gives South Point a 10-1 record overall and a two-game lead in the OVC at 6-1. Fairland fell to 8-6 and 3-5.

South Point broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the fourth inning.

Anthony Ross walked and came around to score when a pickoff throw went down the right field line.

Trenton Moore then walked, Chase McWhorter doubled, Tyler Smith walked, and two runs scored on a pair of passed balls. Jacob Seagraves’s base hit scored Smith.

Fairland got two runs back in the fifth when Ethan Long and Zach Jordan singled and Cole Hatfield smacked a two-run double.

But the Pointers answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Ross had a two-out double and scored on an error.

Fairland got a run in the sixth when Tyler Thackston singled, moved up on a passed ball and scored on an error.

South Point was more than up to the challenge by scoring five runs to lead 10-3.

Seagraves got a base hit and scored on a passed ball. Brown reached on an error and scored when Beau Weed grounded out.

Ross and Moore singled and both scored on McWhorter’s second double. An overthrow to first base allowed McWhorter to score.

The Dragons got their final run in the seventh inning. Matasich singled, went to second base on an error and scored on Thackston’s ground out.

Ross went the distance to get the win. He struck out five and walked just one.

Nathaniel Burcham took the loss. He struck out 11 and walked six in going five innings.

“Burcham pitched well enough to win. He deserved a better fate,” said Snyder.

McWhorter, Ross and Seagraves each went 2-3 to lead the Pointers.

Thackston and Matasich were 2-4 for Fairland.
