Redwomen clinch first-ever OVC softball crown

PEDRO – Forget the Red Sox. Forget the Cubs. The jinx is over for the Rock Hill Redwomen.

Coupled with Fairland’s 14-4 loss to South Point, Rock Hill clinched its first-ever Ohio Valley Conference softball championship with a 7-0 shutout win Monday over the River Valley Lady Raiders.

Rock Hill is 14-0 overall and 8-0 in the OVC. The Redwomen have a three-game lead with two games to play.

“We’re excited,” said coach Mary Harper. “We knew we had a chance (to win the league), but you never know. There are no guarantees. The league is always really close.”

Rock Hill jumped out quickly with two runs in the first inning.

Katrina Settle walked, stole second and scored on a hit by Bobbi Harper. Shelli Harper singled, the Harper cousins pulled off a double steal and Bobbi Harper scored on a passed ball.

The Redwomen scored three more in the third inning.

Settle was safe on an error and Bobbi Harper was safe on a fielder’s choice. Shelli Harper singled in Settle and the duo pulled off another double steal. Candice Chaffins popped out, but a throwing error on the play allowed Bobbi Harper to score.

Brooke Skinner doubled home Shelli Harper.

The final two runs scored in the fifth.

Jazel DeAutremont doubled and went to third on a deep fly ball by Bobbi Harper. Shelli Harper doubled home the run and went to third base on an error. She scored on a wild pitch.

Bobbi Harper got the win as she tossed a two-hitter. She struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

Shelli Harper was 3-3 and Skinner 2-3 to pace the offense.

Rock Hill hosts Ironton Tuesday and Coal Grove Wednesday.

On Saturday, the Redwomen swept a doubleheader from Oak Hill in a pair of five-inning games, 6-1 and 19-1.

DeAutremont made her first start of the season in the first game and pitched a one-hitter. She fanned 10 and walked only two.

Shelli Harper had a two-run single as Rock Hill took a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Settle singled, stole second and third, and DeAutremont singled in the run for a 4-0 lead. RBI hit

DeAutremont tripled and Bobbi Harper had a run-scoring single in the fourth. Shelli Harper singled and, after a double steal, Bobbi Harper came home on a wild pitch.

Rock Hill scored all 19 of its runs in the first inning of the second game en route to the easy win.
