Sectional tournament pairings annouced for baseball, softball

As the season winds down, the season gets going again.

The regular season is nearing its end but the postseason tournament is a week away after sectional pairings were announced Sunday.

The boys Division III baseball tournament starts on Tuesday, May 8, and the finals are Thursday, May 11. All games are at 5 p.m.

No. 8-seed Ironton (9-8) will host No. 9 Crooksville (9-8) and No. 1 Wheelersburg (20-2) faces No. 16 River Valley (1-16) with the winners to meet.

No. 6 Fairland (11-6) hosts No. 11 New Lexington (8-8) and the winner takes on either No. 3 Federal Hocking (15-8) or N. 14 Belpre (5-8).

No. 13 Coal Grove (10-13) visits No. 4 Portsmouth (13-9) while No. 12 Chesapeake (7-8) travels to Alexander (11-4) and the winners will meet at the home site of either Coal Grove or Portsmouth.

No. 2 South Point (12-1) hosts No. 15 Nelsonville-York (5-12) and the winner will entertain the winner of No. 7 Wellston (13-7) and No. 10 Oak Hill (10-9).

Rock Hill is the only area team in Division II. The No. 4 Redmen (9-5) hosts No. 5 Waverly (12-10) on Monday, May 7. The winner advances to play Wednesday, May 10, against the survivor of the bracket that includes No. 1 Warren (18-3), No. 8 Jackson (8-13) and No. 9 Athens (2-16).

The Division IV tournament is also on May 7 and 10.

No. 2 St. Joseph (13-2) plays in the final May 10 at home against the winner of No. 7 Western (6-11) and No. 10 Manchester (2-13).

No. 3 Symmes Valley (9-9) hosts No. 6 Eastern (6-9) on May 10.

No. 8 Green (4-8) entertains No. 9 New Boston (3-16) May 7 and the winner plays at No. 1 Portsmouth Notre Dame (15-5) on May 10.

On the softball side, the girls’ Division III tournament will be Monday, May 7, and Thursday, May 11.

No. 4 Fairland (13-7) is at home against No. 13 Nelsonville-York (3-14) and that winner hosts the winner of No. 12 Coal Grove (4-11) at No. 5 Chesapeake (11-9).

No. 7 Ironton (9-10) will entertain No. 10 South Point (6-9) and the winner travels to play at the winner of No. 15 Oak Hill (0-18) at No. 2 Wellston (18-2).

Rock Hill (17-0), the No. 1 seed in the East sectional, gets a bye and plays at home May 11 against the winner between No. 9 Federal Hocking (8-11) at No. 8 Alexander (10-10).

In Division IV, No. 1 Green (15-1) is at home May 12 against the winner of No. 8 Lucasville Valley (5-13) and No. 9 New Boston (7-10).

No. 3 Symmes Valley (9-10) hosts No. 6 Eastern (8-10) May 12.

All bracket winners advance to the district tournament.
