JACKSON — This is baseball. Save the kicking for football or soccer.

The South Point Pointers got caught “kicking” the baseball around Thursday in an 8-5 loss to the Minford Falcons in the Division III district semifinals.

The Pointers were guilty of an uncharacteristic six errors as their tournament journey came to an end.

“We kicked the ball around. You can’t win a district game with six errors. It seems like we haven’t made six errors all year,” said Pointers coach Marty Patrick.

“Our kids kept fighting back and fighting back. We just dug ourselves a hole and couldn’t get out.”

Minford got a run in the first when Ethan Gaines reached on an error, Keenan Havens singled and Sean Childers was safe on an error.

The lead went to 2-0 in the second when Jared Farmer singled and Matheny reached on a two-out error.

In a four-run third inning, Aaron Oesch, Ethan Havens and Luke Lester singled and Childers cleared the bases with a triple. Childers came home on a fielder’s choice.

South Point got on the board in the bottom of the third inning to make it 6-1.

Heath Bridges singled but was erased when Chris Brown hit into a fielder’s choice. Brown stole second base and scored when Beau Weed singled.

Minford came back to score twice in the fourth inning for an 8-1 lead.

Gaines and Oesch both reached on errors and Lester had a two-run single.

South Point began to fight back with a run the fifth inning.

Brown hit into a fielder’s choice, stole third base and came home on a wild pitch.

The Pointers got three runs in the sixth.

Anthony Ross and Trenton Moore singled, and Chase McWhorter walked to load the bases. Jacob Seagraves walked to force in a run and Bridges doubled home two more runs.

Bridges finished 2-3 at the plate.

Moore was strapped with the loss despite allowing only four earned runs. He struck out seven and walked three.

South Point ends the season 19-2 and Ohio Valley Conference champions.

“It was a great bunch of seniors. There’s a lot of talent in that bunch,” Patrick said. “But all the kids played well.”
