If Election Day for the Ohio High School Athletic Association is an indicator, Jay Wolfe might want to think about running for public office.

Wolfe, the Ironton native and athletic director at Lewis Center Olentangy, was recently elected to the Class AAA Central District Athletic Board.

Wolfe, an all-district guard in basketball at Ironton, spent 10 years as an assistant basketball coach at Capital University and then Ohio University under Danny Nee and Billy Hahn.

Hahn was recently named to Bob Huggins’ coaching staff at West Virginia.

Wolfe left Ohio University to take the job as athletic director and head basketball coach at Watkins Memorial. He later accepted the position as AD at Olentangy.

The school district has continued to grow and added Liberty a few years ago and is set to open Olentangy Orange.

Wolfe’s term begins in August that makes him eligible to be appointed to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Control in 2008.

“In 2008 a person from the Central district will be appointed to the board of control. I wasn’t even aware of that,” Wolfe said.

The central district position became available when a longtime board member from the 30-team Columbus league retired.

“The guys in our league have 30 teams and they’re broken into divisions. The guys in our league felt with 30 teams we needed a voice on the district board,” Wolfe said.

“Someone said to me, ‘Why don’t you run?’ I said, ‘Do you want me to run?’ I guess they figured I had the time.”

Not only will Wolfe be busy with his job and board duties, he will be following around one of his daughters, Madison, who is an outstanding swimmer.

Madison, who will be in the eighth grade next fall, has all ready broken three of Olentangy’s high school records.
