Driver of car in fatality indicted

A Waterloo man accused of causing the car wreck that killed his wife, and a Willow Wood man accused of shooting one man and assaulting another with a baseball bat were among those indicted this week by a Lawrence County grand jury.

Donald L. Lewis, 37, of 1850 County Road 48, was indicted on one count of aggravated vehicular homicide.

Authorities said Lewis was southbound on State Route 93 May 19 when he wrecked his car, killing his wife, Elizabeth Lewis.

Lawrence County Prosecutor J.B. Collier Jr., said Lewis’ blood alcohol level was over the legal level of intoxication.

In another case, Charles Mahan, 68, of 3265 County Road 64, was indicted on two counts of felonious assault, one of which also carries a gun specification.

Witnesses told authorities they were attending a graduation party near Mahan’s residence in early June when he came out of the woods wielding a ball bat. He allegedly struck one man with the bat and later shot at another party-goer.

He then allegedly ran into the woods and stayed there a couple of days before returning home and surrendering to authorities.

The grand jury returned a string of indictments against an Ashland, Ky., man who holed himself up in the Ironton Police Department during a standoff

in May. Joseph M. Krantz, 31, was indicted on one count each of aggravated robbery, felonious assault on a peace officer with a gun specification, possession of a deadly weapon while under detention, inducing panic, disrupting public service, resisting arrest and vandalism.

Others indicted were:

4Robert Morrow, 50, 1798 County Road 47, Waterloo, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

4 Michael Akers, 39, 1796 County Road 19, Kitts Hill, one count each of possession of powder cocaine and obstructing official business.

4Jeffrey R. Ash, 25, 85 Private Drive 268, South Point, deception to obtain a dangerous drug.

4 Terri Knipp, 34, also of 85 Private Drive 268, South Point and Ash’s alleged co-defendant, deception to obtain a dangerous drug.

4Ted E. Arrington, Jr., 19, 96 Private Drive 10948, County Road 1, Chesapeake, grand theft.

4Johnny D. Lewis, 24, one count each of burglary and receiving stolen property.

4Scotty McDonald, 20, 3538 County Road 31, Chesapeake, felonious assault.

4Justin K. Law, 22, Abingdon, Va., two counts of grand theft of a firearm.

4Misty Shavor, 27, 4014 County Road 55, South Point, one count each of theft and burglary and two counts of domestic violence.

4Shane F. Lemley, 33, 1293 County Road 42, Proctorville, two counts of theft.

4James R. Bailey, 26, 400 Spruce St., Ironton, breaking and entering.

4John R. Ratliff, 22, 1468 County Road 21, Ironton, assault on a peace officer.

4Phillip Smithers, 23, Ashland, Ky., burglary.

4Jessica Dye, 27,

Ashland, Ky.,

and Smithers’ alleged co-defendant, complicity to burglary.

4Kelli Morgan, 23, 418 County Road 52, Ironton, illegal conveyance of an illegal drug to a person within a detention facility. She is accused of trying to sneak marijuana and pills to a friend incarcerated at the Lawrence County Jail.

4Robert Wise, 23, 2439 S. 12th St., Ironton, two counts of assault on a peace officer.

4Jeffrey Shope, 47, 2434 S. Eighth St., Ironton, two counts of domestic violence.

4Johnny Corbin Sr., 42, 1723 S. Fourth St., Ironton, gross sexual imposition. The victim was a girl under the age of 13.

There were two secret drug-related indictments and four secret indictments for criminal non-support.

The grand jury met Monday and Tuesday.
