MAUMEE — The new pitch count rule in little league tournaments can cause teams a problem.

Unless you’re the Fairland Senior League All-Stars.

Taking advantage of their deep pitching staff, Fairland used five different pitchers in a 14-2 five-inning rout of New Miami Saturday to begin the state Senior League tournament.

Nate Burcham, the first of the five pitchers, got the win. Also pitching were Ethan Long, Robbie Easterling, Tyler Godby, and Travis Zimmerman.

Manager Al Begil said the pitching depth is a nice luxury.

“We’ve got eight quality pitchers on the team. If you’re deep in pitching with the new pitch count, then you’re in good shape. We’ve got the tools, we just have to put it in place,” said Begil.

“We’re so deep in pitching we were able to pitch five guys. We were the talk of the tournament.”

After a scoreless first inning, Fairland erupted for nine runs in the second inning.

Cole Hafield and Long singled and Jake Seagraves walked to load the bases.

Burcham and Godby followed with two-run singles to ignite the uprising.

Leading 10-2 in the fifth inning, Hatfield hit a two-run homer to highlight a four-run inning and create the five-inning mercy rule.

Hatfield finished the game 3-3 and Burcham 3-4, each with a pair of runs batted in.

Travis Zimmerman was 2-2 and Godby 2-4 as Fairland banged out 14 hits.

Fairland plays Indian Valley of Canton at 3 p.m. today in the eight-team tournament field.
