ROME TOWNSHIP — Leon Phelps The Ladies Man strode to the head of the line last night when awards were handed out at the Lawrence County Junior Fair Meat Goat Show.

His owner, Bethany Huff, took the grand champion trophy, while Brenna Morris took home the reserve champion trophy.

Judge Bob Hare said while Huff and Morris got top spots, he was pleased with the work of all the children who showed a goat.

“They did a super job presenting their goats, feeding them. There are a lot of other things they could be doing that would not be nearly as constructive as this,” Hare said. He also praised fair organizers for their smooth operation of the event.

But in giving the nod to Huff and Morris, Hare said he thought their goats were the most complete in terms muscle, structure and eye appeal.

Huff said she was shocked at her win, but pleased. She thanked her family for their help and her boyfriend, Adam Corn, as well. She also credited C&C Grocery, where she purchases her feed. As for her part in her success, she said it was all part of the job.

“I didn’t do anything, really,” she said. “I fed it, took care of it, and walked it a lot. That was about it.”

“That and a lot of prayer,” her mom, Nancy Huff added. “This is her last year in 4-H and I wanted to see her go out with a bang.”

Morris said she was also pleased with her win. And what did she do to prepare her goat, Dewey, for his night in the spotlight?

“I walked him, fed him,” she replied.

In the showmanship competition, San Frazer earned the top spot in the senior division while Scott Dial was the junior division showmanship winner. Dial said he thought his win was “pretty cool.”

“I just wanted to come out here and do my best. I wanted to win,” Dial said.

Frazer said he was also pleased with his win.
