Preparations are underway for the annual Lawrence County Historical Society Ghost Walk at Woodland Cemetery.

Saturday, some of the president-day occupants of Ironton who will portray some of the area’s long-departed citizens donned costume and welcomed the public to the Lawrence County Historical Museum for a Meet the Characters afternoon.

The ghost walk will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 in Woodland Cemetery. More than 2,000 people are expected to take the self-guided journey amongst the tombstones and for brief but vivid lessons in Lawrence County history.

“The county has so much history, perhaps more so than other places. We had at one time one of the wealthiest women in the United States, Nanny Kelley Wright, the Scott family, whose daughter married into the Marshall Fields fortune. We also have the murder mystery of Dr. Lowery,” historical society member Bob Price said.

“We have people who come to this (ghost walk) who wouldn’t open a book and read about history,” fellow member Fondalene Alfrey agreed.

The museum is open 1-4 p.m. Friday-Sunday.
