CHESAPEAKE — This isn’t the kind of rerun the Chesapeake Panthers wanted to see.

In a game similar to last season, the Portsmouth Trojans bounced the Panthers 60-13 Friday in the season opener.

Last year the Trojans won a shootout 71-44. Chesapeake coach Phil Davis thought he was going to see the same thing.

“The first series we went right down and scored, and they proceeded to do the same thing. It was like last year,” said Davis.

Even though this year’s margin of victory was greater than last season, Davis said the Panthers weren’t totally outclassed.

“I would like to say we were outmanned, but we had two good drives and didn’t score and we stopped them twice,” said Davis. “For the first quarter, I felt pretty good. We just didn’t continue to execute that well. It just kind of snowballed.”

Chesapeake went up 7-0 on a 15-yard pass from Aaron Donahoe to Drew Blake. Eric Ross kicked the point after.

Portsmouth came right back with a 5-yard run by Wes Jordan and John Hacha’s conversion kick.

The Trojans took the lead for good on a 1-yard run by Jordan and Hacka’s kick to make it 14-7.

Two long plays in the second quarter broke the game open.

Forrest Johnson caught a 44-yard pass from Shane Porter and Chaze Southern bolted 53 yards for a touchdown with 2:25 left and it was 27-7 at the break.

Chesapeake trailed 48-7 before Donahoe ran 1 yard for a touchdown two minutes into the fourth quarter.

Jordan finished with 85 yards on eight carries as Portsmouth racked up 276 rushing yards. Porter ran for 62 yards and was 8 of 13 passing for 185.

Donahoe led the Panthers with 51 yards rushing and threw for 25 more.

Clinton Baise had an interception for the Panthers. Jon Royster had an interception for the Trojans.
