GLENHAYES, W.Va. — A lot of people like to chew bubble gum or drink a cup of coffee to settle their nerves.

The Rock Hill Redmen prefer kickoff returns for touchdowns.

Falling behind 13-0, Rock Hill used a 92-yard kickoff return by Mitchell Davenport to spark a 29-21 come-from-behind win Friday in the season opener for both teams.

“We started off with jitters early. Once we settled down, we showed a lot of character and came back,” said Redmen coach Todd Knipp.

“The kickoff return got us going and then we began to control the line of scrimmage and we made plays on offense, defense and on special teams.”

Another key play came just before halftime when quarterback Drew Kuehne was forced to scramble out of the pocket.

But while he was running, he saw twin brother Seth Kuehne and tossed him a short pass. Seth Kuehne caught the ball, cut back and raced into the end zone to complete a 57-yard pass play.

The two hooked up on the conversion and Rock Hill led 15-13 with six seconds on the clock.

“(Drew) was scrambling and he looked up and Seth was waving his arms. He made a couple of moves and got into the end zone. That was a big momentum swing for us going into halftime,” said Knipp.

Tolsia had taken the lead on a 2-yard run by Jimbo Smith following a bad snap on a punt by Rock Hill. His run capped a quick 11-yard, 3-play drive.

A 54-yard pass from Derrick Robinson to Darin Parsley put the Rebels up 13-0 on the first play of the second quarter.

After Rock Hill rallied to take the halftime lead, the Rebels came back in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Robertson and it was 21-15. The run ended a 63-yard, 11-play march.

“(Tolsia) changed up the things they usually do and gave us some fits early. But we adjusted and settled down and we were fine,” said Knipp.

The Redmen rallied to tie the game with a 12-play, 64-yard drive of its own which culminated on a 12-yard run by Wes Pierson.

Special teams came up big again for the Redmen who blocked a punt at the Tolsia 27-yad line.

Four plays later Pierson went 2 yards for the lead with 5:10 left to play. Pierson also ran for the conversion.

Pierson finished the game with 120 yards on 20 carries. Shane Bostic added 43 yards on seven tries. Drew Kuehne was 2 of 7 passing for 73 yards.

In the four-year series, the home team has yet to win.
