PORTSMOUTH — One of the last bashes of summer will take place this weekend in Portsmouth.

The annual River Days begins this evening and runs through Sunday. Festival co-chair Tim Angel said an estimated 120,000-150,000 people will attend one of the River Days activities during the Labor Day weekend.

“This is one of the premier Labor Day celebrations in Ohio,” Angel said. “A lot of time and effort is put into it.”

The entertainment lineup includes the folk group The Grass Roots this evening. The 1960s era group is best known for its songs “Two divided by love” and “Temptation eyes.”

Friday night, the country-western group Shenandoah will take the stage. Shenandoah is best known for its hits “Church on Cumberland Road,” “Next to you, next to me” and “Sunday in the south.”

On Saturday night, rocker Eddie Money will perform. Money, is best known for his 1980s hits “Two tickets to paradise” and “Take me home tonight” and “I think I’m in love.”

The 1970s soft rock group Ambrosia will cap the evening performances with a concert Sunday night, followed by the annual fireworks extravaganza. Ambrosia is best known for its songs “How much I feel” and “Biggest part of me.”

All concerts are at 9 p.m. at the Court Street landing.Angel said in addition to the music, there are numerous other events throughout the weekend, such as the River Days parade at 11 a.m. Saturday, the queen’s pageant at 7 a.m. Saturday and activities for children.

“The purpose of River Days is to bring great entertainment to local folks who might not have any other means of seeing some of these performances and to provide a fun-filled family weekend— that’s the way we bill it,” Angel said.
