Ironton golfers improving

Things are starting to swing the right way for the Ironton Fighting Tigers.

Ironton had one of its best scores of the season in a tri-match victory Wednesday at the Ironton Country Club.

Ironton won the match with a 154 total. Jackson was next with a 162, and Greenup County, Ky. shot a 164.

“We had our best score of the season (at home),” Ironton coach Jeff Kerns said. “We got contributions from a lot of guys. We’re playing better, we just need to be consistent.”

Ironton’s Nathan Kerns shared medalist honors with Jackson’s Morgan Dobbins as each shot a 1-under par 34.

Josh Cooke had his best round of the season with a 38 for Ironton. Andy Holtzapfel was just one stroke behind and Aaron Christian shot a 43.

Josh Mullins added a 50 and Mason Weisgarber a 53.

In the reserve match, Ironton had a 186 and Greenup County 187.

Jonathan Williams led Ironton with a 42, Michael Filkins a 43, Brice Roach shot a 50 and Josh Murphy carded a 51.

On Tuesday, Ironton played at West Union and fired a 149. However, host West Union played the short course with a 130 total.

Nathan Kerns led Ironton with a 2-under par 31. Holtzapfel shot a 35, Mullins a 39 for his best round, and Christian a 44.

Weisgarber was next with a 45 and Cooke had a 48.

The Fighting Tigers had a pair of matches last week.

Friday’s match at Cliffside Country Club in Gallipolis, Ironton had a 161 to beat Gallipolis by nine strokes. River Valley had a 206 total.

Kerns was the medalist again with a 1-under 35. Holtzapfel had a 37, Cooke 44, Mullins 45, and Christian and Weisgarber each fired a 46.

During last Thursday’s match at Shawnee Golf Course in Portsmouth, Ironton played well but went 1-2 on the day.

Portsmouth Clay shot a 156, Portsmouth 164 and Ironton had a 165. Northwest was next with a 192.

Medalist honors belonged to Kerns who had a par 35.

Weisgarber shot a 42 to finish second for Ironton. Cooke and Holtzapfel each carded a 44, Mullins had a 47, and Filkins was next with a 50.

Ironton (29-24) plays Chesapeake at Esquire Country Club Thursday.
