Whenever people have a need for services, Mary Cogan listens.

“We started out doing storage,” said Mary Cogan, co-owner with her husband, Carlton, who works for WSAZ-TV. “People came to us wanting to rent my husband’s pickup truck, but that wouldn’t work for insurance purposes.”

So, the next step was contacting U-Haul and becoming a dealer with boxes and packing materials. Then, people were asking if they shipped UPS, so the Cogans contacted UPS and became a dealer to pack and ship.

In 11 years, South Point Storage has grown to include not only adding more storage spaces but also adding many more services including truck rentals, packing and shipping, propane, notary services, and the latest venture, Checkfreepay.

In the past year, the company has sold about 5,000 gallons of propane. When the local pharmacy decided to give up Checkfreepay, they called South Point Storage. Cogan decided to add that service this year.

More than 256 companies can be paid through the service, including utilities, telephones, cell phones and numerous credit card companies.

The company has four storage locations in Lawrence County and they are fully staffed six days a week. They also have rental properties.

“We also have some apartments, homes we rent out and mobile home lots,” Cogan said. “We’ve done that for almost 20 years.”

She said that people can get their new home, reserve a truck to make the move, get the boxes for packing and pay their electric deposit all at the office.

“It’s just one-stop shopping,” Cogan said. “The community has been very, very good to us.

The company has two full-time employees, Amanda McNeely and Missi Lawson, and two part time employees.

Recently, they purchased the former Fitzpatrick Storage and in May, they opened a new building with 6,000 square feet of storage with a total of 343 storage spaces at all four locations.

“We’ve just really looked into the community and they’re the ones that’s kept us in business because we’ve done what they wanted us to do,” Cogan said. “I love it. I cannot imagine doing anything else but this.”
