Pointers#8217; big plays produce first victory

SOUTH POINT — There were two things that were a known fact coming into the game between the Greenup County Musketeers and the South Point Pointers.

First, one team would get their first win of the season and, if the three previous games were an inclination, big plays would be a factor in the game for South Point.

Both of these items were on the side of the Pointers, and lead to a 35-22 win over the Musketeers.

“We had a very good week of practice, and a very good game plan tonight” South Point head coach Doug Shilot said.

“We have played three very good teams, and we played another one tonight, but it was nice to see the big plays be on our side.”

The first big play came when Jacob Seagraves found a seam and scored from 29 yards out to give the Pointers the lead to end a 9-play, 62-yard drive. Kyle Hughes kick was blocked, and the Pointers led 6-0 with 6:02 remaining in the opening stanza.

Both teams traded punts on their next possessions, and Greenup County got on the board with a 41-yard field goal from Crocket Reed to cut the lead to 6-3 with 1:17 to go in the first.

South Point opened the second quarter, but four plays into the quarter; South Point quarterback Beau Weed was intercepted by Greenup County’s Nick Carnahan. However, six plays later, Greenup County would have to try for another field goal from Reed, but the 30-yarder was no good.

South Point was forced to punt after the missed field goal, but two plays into the Musketeer drive Hughes intercepted a pass by Greenup County quarterback Eric Craft.

However, the Pointers were again forced to a three and out, and that would set up Greenup County’s first touchdown of the night. The three-play, 43-yard drive culminated with Craft finding running back Corey Justice for a 25-yard touchdown. Crocket Reed’s kick was good, and that gave the Musketeers’ the lead at 10-6 with 2:15 to go in the half.

South Point would take over at their own 20-yard line after the kickoff with only 2:15 before halftime. However, the methodical running game moved the ball down to the Greenup County 39 in just four plays.

Weed then found Chase Kratzenburg for a 34-yard gain down to the Musketeer 5. On the next play, Weed called his own number to give the Pointers the lead. Weed also found Cory Garred for the two-point conversion to give the Pointers a 14-10 lead at the break.

South Point (1-3) was forced to punt on its opening possession of the second half, but took it right back in three plays when Seagraves intercepted the pass from Craft.

The Pointers took over at the Greenup County (0-3) 39, and six plays later; Pointers running back Ryan Plants scored from 20 yards out and it was 21-10 with 6:36 to go in the third.

The Pointers would force the third interception of Craft of the Musketeers next possession, but Greenup County would force South Point to a three and out. But a bad snap allowed the Musketeers to take over at the Pointers 39.

Five plays into the drive, Greenup County was faced with a third-and-4 and Craft found Zach Smith for a 19-yard gain down to the Pointers 3. Two plays later, Craft snuck in for the score.

Greenup County went for two, but the conversion was no good; and the score was 21-16 with 1:24 to go in the third.

The Pointers started their next drive at their own 25, and moved down to the Greenup County 2 as time ran out in the third quarter.

On the first play for the fourth quarter, Plants scored his second touchdown of the game. Hughes added the kick and the lead was 28-16 with 11:55 to go in the game. The drive was highlighted by a 58-yard run by Weed. Plants finished with 63 yards on 10 carries, and scored twice.

“Our offensive line blocked very well, and the backs found the seams,” Shilot said. “We took care of the ball and executed very well.”

Greenup County would start their next drive at their own 43, but on the third play Kraztenburg forced the fourth interception of Craft and returned it 53 yards for another score. Hughes added the kick, and the lead was 35-16 with 10:30 to go.

Greenup County would take over at their own 15, and 11 plays later; Musketeers running back took the reverse from Craft, and then found T.J. Stephenson for a 29 yard score. The two-point try was no good, and the final score was set at 35-22.

Weed finished with 141 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.

He was 1-3 for 34 yards passing. Weed also had an interception on defense.

Seagraves finished the game with 51 yards on 11 carries and a score. He also had an interception and a sack.

The Pointers defense held Greenup County to 24 yards on 26 carries in the game.

On the other side, the Pointers ran for 286 yards on 54 carries.

Craft finished the game 14-30 with 149 yards passing.

Corey Justice finished with 1-1 passing for 29 yards and a score.

He also had 6 catches for 61 yards.

The Pointers make the long trip to Welch, W.Va., next week to play Mount View.
