It’s lunch time at the Lawrence County Courthouse and the bar surrounding Candy Guy is almost full. People perched on bar stools and relaxing in booths want a break from work and a quick meal and that’s what they find at Candy’s Corner.

Guy, of Decatur, opened the shop in late August when she saw an ad in the newspaper advertising the lunch counter was available for lease and decided to send in her resume. Guy said she is pleased with the new establishment and new friends.

“We have good customers,” she said. “That’s what I probably like best.”

Lawrence County is one of only a few locally that have a lunch counter — not just a snack bar that sells soft drinks and candy — a short order grill that prepares meals.

“We have soups and sandwiches and breakfasts. We make our own baked goods,” Guy said.

Guy worked for 18 years at the Plaza 52 Truck Stop in Coal Grove. Her grandmother, Wilma Mae Farmer, used to operate that restaurant. Now, her daughter, Amber Potter, helps her with Candy’s Corner and with all those new friends.

“They do a good job,” said Ernie Sizemore, who works in courthouse maintenance. “I’m proud of them. They’re nice and polite to everybody.”

The lunch counter is open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
