SOUTH POINT —In a matchup of two teams who have the same philosophy, each team knows what is coming.

However, South Point could not figure out Coal Grove running back Frank Delawder in the second half as he ran for 144 yards and scored two touchdowns in the second half to lead the Hornets to a 21-18 win over the Pointers in a key OVC game for both teams.

It was also a milestone for Coal Grove head coach Dave Lucas who recorded his 200th career victory.

“I can’t say enough about the way that Frank (Delawder) played tonight,” Hornets coach Dave Lucas said.

“Our kids are playing consistently right now and minimizing mistakes, and I challenged our guys last Friday about that.”

On the opening kickoff, Coal Grove’s Oakie Haynes returned the ball 49 yards to the Pointers 31-yard line. Eight running plays later, Haynes capped off the drive with a 4-yard score. The Taylor Dean kick was good, and the Hornets led 7-0 with 7:50 to go in the first.

South Point would start their first possession from their own 37 yard line.

On the fourth play, Pointers quarterback broke several tackles and ran for 45 yards down to the Coal Grove 3. On the next play, Jacob Seagraves leaped over a Hornets defender into the end zone.

With kicker Kyle Hughes out due to a shoulder injury, South Point was forced to go for the two-point conversion and failed to trail 7-6 at the 5:23 mark.

“Our kids played hard tonight, and the effort was their,” Pointers coach Doug Shilot said.

“We got a little fatigued in the second half, stopped playing our technique, and they were able to make the plays.”

A 55-yard kickoff return by Deion Cunningham put Coal Grove at the Pointers’ 36, but Weed came up with an interception to halt the scoring threat.

South Point recovered a fumble at its own 43. Seagraves took a handoff and raced 57 yards for his second touchdown on the next play and it was 12-7 with 7:37 left in the half.

Coal Grove drove to the Pointers 20-yard line just before the half only to have the drive stall on an incomplete pass in the end zone.

South Point fumbled the ball back to Coal Grove two plays later with 38 seconds left in the half.

Coal Grove got to the 7-yard line, but a sack by Weed pushed the ball to the 11 and Doug Dillon blocked a field goal attempt.

A fumble by South Point on the second play of the third quarter gave Coal Grove the ball at the 44.

Eight plays later Delawder scored on an 11-yard run and it was 13-12 with 7:10 on the clock.

Following a Pointer punt, Coal Grove scored again on a 3-yard run by Delawder. He also ran for the conversion and it was 21-12 with 2:03 left quarter.

Weed ran 58 yards on the last play of the third quarter, then threw a 25-yard scoring pass between two defenders to Chase Kratzenberg to start the fourth quarter and make it 21-18 with 11:52 left to play.

The Pointers were unable to convert the conversion.

After trading punts, Coal Grove (5-2, 2-1) got the ball with 6:16 to go in the game and attempt to run out the clock.

South Point got the ball back on downs, but Weed was hit while scrambling and the ball popped loss. Coal Grove recovered and this time the Hornets were able to eat up the rest of the time and secure the win.

“The kids executed our offense well, and except for a couple of breakdowns in our blocking assignments, and allowed their guys in the backfield to stop a couple of drives,” Lucas said.

“Overall the kids did a good job, and (the Pointers) have a nice team with good quickness and speed.

It’s a battle when you try to offset speed.”

Delawder finished the game with 165 yards on 25 carries, and two touchdowns.

He also ran 21 of the Hornets 29 plays in the second half.

“I give Coal Grove credit. They did a good job and made some big plays” Shilot said.

“I take my hat off to them.”

South Point was led by Seagraves who had 96 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns. Weed finished with 87 yards on 10 carries, and was 3-4 passing for 29 yards and a score.
