For the few dozen college students who converged on Ironton Saturday, it was the pursuit of victory — and for some the thrill of the same — that got them out of bed so early on a weekend.

Ohio University Southern played host to this month’s Kentucky Collegiate Quick Recall League competition.

League play is open to all commonwealth colleges and universities as well as those from contiguous states, such as OUS. Students from for Kentucky schools joined area students the nearly day-long event: Henderson Community College, Murray State University,

Jefferson Community College and Georgetown College.

Teams of four students each matched their skills in math, humanities, science, history and current events.

In division 1, for juniors and seniors, Georgetown took the top spot, followed by OUS and Murray State. In division 2, Georgetown took the top spot again, followed by Henderson, OUS and Jefferson respectively.

OUS division two captain Laurissa Goodman said she was “so pumped” following her team’s showing and was looking forward to the November meet on the Henderson campus. OUS advisor Nina Queen said she was pleased not only with her two teams’ placements but also their collective spirit.

“I’m pleased with how well they came together as a team,” she said.

Most of the schools playing in the Saturday competition had to make lengthy drives, with Murray State having the farthest, seven and a half hours each way, to take part. Murray team member Aaron Carpenter said the satisfaction of matching academic skills with other college students was well worth the trip.

“I’ve been doing this since I was in the fifth grade,” he said. “And I fully intend to continue doing it as long as they will let me.”

The last competition is April 5 on the Georgetown campus.
