Possible chemical leak in Greenup County

At 5:30 a.m. this morning, a chemical smell was reported in Raceland, Ky.

When 911 dispatch in Greenup County, Ky., received the call, the caller reported that it smelled like chlorine, but it was never verified, the dispatcher said.

Raceland, Flatwoods and Worthington, Ky., fire departments responded to the call.

A “shelter in place” warning was announced for a one-half mile radius of Pond Creek and Vine Street in Raceland.

Also, the town of Worthington, Ky., was on a “shelter in place” warning.

The chemical smell came from a CSX train car, believed to be empty.

Two HAZMAT teams were called to the scene.

Traffic was blocked off close to the scene. At 8:30 a.m. the fire departments were clearing the scene and waiting at the station for further instructions.

“At this time it is unknown,” said Capt. Nathan Hamilton, of the Raceland Fire Department. “Everything we have set up has been precautionary just in case it is something. Fire departments are basically on a standby situation.”

He said one HAZMAT team had arrived and another team was on the way to the scene at 9 a.m.
