COAL GROVE — For more than a decade, members of the Coal Grove Church of the Nazarene have shown their love for their neighbors by feeding, clothing and caring for those who need help the most.

Next weekend, the tradition continues.

The church will have its annual Make A Difference Day activities Oct. 27. There will be a free clothing giveaway and free lunch from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

There will also be a health fair with various medical screenings from 9 a.m.-noon. While some church members are serving the food and sorting the clothing, still others will spend that day making repairs to the homes of elderly or handicapped people in the community.

“We just feel like there is a need,” Make A Difference Day Chairwoman Lillian Slaughter said. “Some people just don’t get what they need from governmental systems and if we can help, we enjoy doing it.”

Slaughter said 30-35 volunteers will take part in the day’s activities. An estimated 150 people will walk away with a meal in their tummies and maybe a newer outfit.

“It gets bigger and bigger every year,” Slaughter said. “We want to let people know we’re there for them and want to assist them if we can.”

This year there will be at least one new pair of helping hands for the church’s event. Pastor Jeff Canfield is a newcomer to the church and was pleased when he heard his new flock was willing to reach out to the community.

“We have great love for the community. We have several outreaches, with a daycare, a senior center and a nursing home. This is a way to extend a hand to the community just as Jesus did when he walked on this earth,” Canfield said.

As part of the health fair, flu shots will be available. The shots will be free to those with Medicare and Medicaid and $20 for everyone else.
