Fairland at Sheldon Clark, Ky.

The Dragons will be after their first win after losing a tough 19-13 decision at Portsmouth West last week.

Sheldon Clark opened the season with a 53-34 win over Perry County.

Running back Adam Dials carried 30 times for 307 yards last week. His running mate, Damen Hensley, is out with an injury.

“They’re big, strong, and a power running team,” said Fairland coach Brent Wilcox on. “We had to keep Dials from getting loose. He’s a one-man wrecking crew.”

Symmes Valley at Matewan

In a Saturday night matchup, the Vikings hit the road for the second straight week as they play the Matewan Tigers.

“They’re young, but they’re juniors so they’re a little older than our sophomores,” said Vikings coach Rusty Webb. “They’re a scrappy bunch.”

Matewan is led by running back Roger Slone (5-8, 168) and slotback Justin Davis (5-9, 145). The quarterback is Josh Sammons (5-11, 157) and the tight end is Joey Fields (6-2, 195).

“Davis had good speed and Fields is a good blocker,” said Webb.

Northwest at Coal Grove

The Hornets christened their new field turf with pre-game ceremonies at 7 p.m.

But the real action begins at 7:30 when the Hornets unleash a stable full of running backs at a Northwest defense that gave up 33 points last week in a 33-7 loss to Sciotoville East.

Quarterback Justin Malone was 9 of 21 passing for 127 yards and an interception. Kyle Prose led the ground game with just 37 yards. The Mohawks only touchdown came on a fumble recovery by Kreig Crabtree.

Coal Grove won its opener 28-20 over Lawrence County, Ky., behind a dominating running game in the first half that build a 22-0 lead.

South Point at

Wheelersburg

It’s going from the frying pan into the fire for the Pointers.

After losing 34-0 to Johnson Central, Ky., last week, South Point visits a Wheelersburg team that began its season with a 39-6 win at Ironton and is still smarting from a 21-14 loss to the Pointers last season.

The Pointers may be without running back Zach Woody who left last week’s game with an injury.

Wheelersburg has a lot of balance in its offense. Quarterback Drew Spradlin threw for 199 yards last week, mainly due to a talented receiving corps that includes Dustin Cook and Matt Jenkins.

The running game is led by Jordan Shankweiler who rushed for more than 100 yards in the opener. Jenkins can also run the ball well along with fullback Craig Stamper.

Wayne at Chesapeake

The Panthers lost 60-13 last week to Portsmouth. Now they get to play the defending West Virginia Class AA state champions.

Wayne, a 34-6 winner over Mount View 34-6 last week, is led by running back Justin Gilkerson who ran for 1,500 yards last season. In the win over Mount View, Jason Thompson had a career-high 117 yards rushing, 113 in the first half.

“There are a lot of people who think they’re better than they were last year,” said Panthers coach Phil Davis.

Wayne beat Chesapeake 34-12 last year.

Piketon at Green

The Bobcats are at home and hoping to bounce back from last week’s loss at Buffalo, W.Va.

Green will have to cut down on its turnovers against the Red Streaks who lost their opener 46-40 to Minford.

Piketon quarterback Kenny Helton was 13 of 20 for 263 yards passing and running back Cody Smith had 73 yards on eight carries.

The Red Streaks held Minford scoreless in the third quarter, then gave up 24 points in the fourth quarter.
