October is National Family History Month. Briggs-Lawrence Library staff has planned a number of events in celebration of it.

This evening at 6 p.m. the main branch staff will host a “Meet famous Irontonians” event.

“It’s a smaller version of the cemetery walk,” Briggs-Lawrence Adult Services Librarian Lori Shafer explained. “For those who couldn’t make the cemetery walk, we will have some famous Ironton people.”

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, several local authors, or authors who have books on local history will sell their books and talk to patrons at the main branch of the library.

“We plan to do this every year,” Shafer said. “It is often difficult to find some of these books and this will be a great opportunity for people to have one-stop shopping and find a lot of different books by different authors and books people may not even know exist.”

The list of authors includes John Martin, who detailed the days of his veterinary practice in “Doc, my tiger’s got an itch” and “Never a ho-hum day,” Jean Butler, who wrote “A history of the Fuller family and other collateral lines,” and Virginia Bryant, who has written “A history of First Baptist Church, Ironton,” “Letters to Eliza” and several other local history books.

In addition, the Lawrence County Historical Society, Lawrence County Genealogical Society and Jesse Stuart Foundation in Ashland, Ky., will also take part in the first-ever event.

There are three offerings on Tuesday, Oct. 23. At 10 a.m. at the main branch of the library, there will be a class on how to use

www.ancestry.com, the Internet site that helps people trace their family tree.

At 6 pm. at the Chesapeake branch of the library, there will be a workshop on the process of restoring old photographs using a scanner.

At 6:30 p.m., there will be a workshop in creating a family history website. This class will also be at the main branch of the library.

On Wednesday, Oct. 24, ghost hunter and author John Kachuba, of Athens, will speak on his experiences in the field of paranormal activity. Kachuba will speak at 6 p.m. at the main branch.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, Daughters of the American Revolution member Barbara Rutledge will speak on her organization. This will be at 7 p.m. at the Proctorville branch.
