Justin Adkins, of Huntington, W.Va., was at the Ohio University Southern Major’s Fair on Thursday afternoon looking for an opportunity to boost his career.

Adkins is a licensed practicing nurse and has been attending Marshall University. But he has grown tired of waiting to get in registered nursing classes.

“I’ve been on the waiting list for the RN program at Marshall for about two and half years and it is getting kind of old,” the Navy veteran said. “That’s a lot of GI Bill money I could be spending.”

His brother-in-law attends OUS, so Adkins came over to see what the college had to offer.

“I’m 99 percent sure I’m going to be attending here,” he said.

For other students who were already sure of what their major was going to be, it was more of a social event.

Rebecca Mantle, of Ashland, Ky., stopped by the Majors Fair between classes. The sophomore has already picked health services administration.

“I just wanted to see all the classes my wonderful school offers,” she said. “I’m not thinking about changing my major, but there are a lot of really great people here who want to help you succeed so they’re nice to know.”

John Miller, one of the academic advisors who along with Janet Waggoner, set up the Majors Fair every year.

“It’s to help students who are undecided to decide on a major and those who pick a major, maybe change it,” Miller said. “They get a chance to talk to program directors and that helps a lot.”

He said they have the event in the fall and it has become very successful attracting around 250 students.

“This gets them on the right path, so that’s why we do it in the fall,” Miller said.

Students who may not be interested in changing their majors have an opportunity to get their degree audit report.

“It’s like a road map for the students to tell them what classes they may need to take for their major,” Miller said. “Now, it tells them when they can register for classes and it’s become an important part of this.”
