SOUTH POINT — The newest shell building at The Point industrial park should be finished by Dec. 1, and it may have an occupant soon after.

Lawrence Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Bill Dingus said Thursday the construction of the building is progressing on schedule.

“We do have a company that has expressed an interest and we are working with them,” Dingus said. He did not elaborate on what outfit may be interested.

The 32,800 square-feet building is being constructed to house four smaller tenants, as opposed to a single large one, making it suitable for a variety of light industry tenants.

This is the third spec building at The Point. The first two built are already occupied.

Dingus also asked for a resolution in support of a plan by developer Ron Lyons to build a nursing home in the Proctorville area.

“East of South Point, there are no nursing homes,” Dingus said, adding that such a development could add 100 jobs to the Lawrence County employment arena.

Commissioners applauded the idea of new development.

“This would be an exciting development and something we want to support,” Commissioner Jason Stephens said. “We want to support and encourage this kind of thing.”

Commissioner Doug Malone agreed.

“This could go hand in hand with RiverWalk,” he said, referring to a proposed marina, commercial and residential development planned for Union Township along the Ohio River.

Commissioners approved the resolution and agreed to send a letter to Lawrence County Engineer David Lynd concerning the condition of some county roads.

Commissioner Tanner Heaberlin said County Road 14 is in need of either repaving or repairs and that he has fielded a complaint from one resident regarding that roadway.

Another resident told Heaberlin County Road 1 needs more speed limit signs posted, alerting drivers to the maximum speed allowed. He said he also got a request for a feasibility study

to determine if it is possible to re-route County Road 182 in Kitts Hill. This would be to accommodate a construction project at Mamre Baptist Church.

Stephens asked Lynd to check the state of County Road 17.
