CHESAPEAKE — On Monday evening, parents and students at Chesapeake Middle School were getting an education in healthy living - just in time for the holiday season.

“We thought it would be something good for the kids,” Wellness Coordinator Cecili Nida said. “We try to emphasize physical activity.”

Chesapeake Middle School had its second annual Wellness Fair to coincide with parent-teacher conferences.

According to Nida, holding the fair during the conference provides a good opportunity to raise parents’ awareness about various health topics.

“We want it to be all about awareness,” she said. “I think it is a good opportunity (because of the) parent-teacher conferences, to involve the parents as well as the students.”

Several booths lined the cafeteria providing information on health topics including nutritional requirements, understanding food labels, bike safety; sleep disorders, sugar, smoking and mypyramid.gov.

The school gymnasium was full of activity with several spots where students could get a little exercise. A giant inflatable took up a corner of the gym where students could jump around.

There was also an obstacle course, speed stacks and a game of Dance-Dance Revolution to get the students moving.

Cassie Seligh, 14, and Danielle Crace, 14, both eighth graders at the school, were working in the mypyramid.gov booth at the event. By answering just a few brief questions about themselves, visitors could leave the booth with an interesting sheet detailing the recommended daily amount of food from each food group, how often you should be physically active during

the week, and limits on fats, sugars and sodium.

“It was awesome, I have learned a lot,” Seligh said. “We have gym first block and we learn about things like reading labels and how much water we should drink.”

“It’s pretty cool,” Crace agreed. “It is awesome all the way around, just learning how to eat and everything.”
