COAL GROVE — A quick switch brought a quick chance.

Leading by just one point at the end of the first quarter, Coal Grove Lady Hornets coach Nick Miller made an adjustment that led to a 57-39 season opening win over the South Gallia Lady Rebels.

South Gallia jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but Jordyn Cox had 6 points and Brittany Harrison 5 as Coal Grove came back to take a 13-12 lead.

Chelsea Delong knocked down 8 points in the second quarter and the defense held South Gallia to only 2 points as Coal Grove opened up a 29-14 halftime cushion.

“We changed up our defense and that made a difference,” said Miller. “You never know what to expect in the first game, so it’s nice to come out of it with a win.”

Cox scored 8 more points and Danielle Carpenter scored 7 points as Coal Grove pulled away to a 48-25 lead.

Miller emptied his bench in the fourth quarter. South Gallia got 7 points from Chelsea Stowers and Jennifer Sheridan 5 as the Lady Rebels outscored Coal Grove 14-9.

Cox led all scorers with 17 points including five 3-pointers. Chelsea Delong had 12 points and Carpenter 10 to lead Coal Grove.

“We had good balance and we need that. We had three players in double figure and another who just missed it.”

Stowers had 14 points and Sheridan 11 points for South Gallia.

In the reserve game, Coal Grove won 22-14. Kelli McMackin had 8 points while Doni Winters and Tori Smith scored 6 each for the Lady Hornets.
