STEWART — Just when the Rock Hill Redmen were on the road to victory, they took a wrong turn.

Cory McCune hit a layup as time expired to give the Federal Hocking Lancers a 63-62 win over the Redmen Saturday night.

“(McCune) just put his head down and got to the rim. We could not get him turned,” said Redmen coach Adam Simpson.

Matt Matney sank two foul shots with six seconds left to give Rock Hill a 62-61 lead. But McCune went the length of the floor to give the Lancers their only lead of the game.

Nathan Davenport had 16 points, seven rebounds, and two assists to lead the Redmen (0-1). Aaron Butler also scored 16 points while Matney finished with 14 points.

McCune led Federal Hocking with 17 points. Grant Smith scored 15, Cory Vales 13 and Kory Williams 11.

Davenport scored 5 points and Wes Pierson had all 4 of his points in the first quarter to give Rock Hill a 19-14 lead.

The Redmen led by as many as 9 points in the second quarter before the Lancers drew within 32-28 at the break. Davenport had 5 more points and Butler 4 in the quarter.

“We had two nine-point leads and we couldn’t put them away,” said Simpson. “We knew they were a good team. They’ve won their league the last three years.”

McCune scored 10 points as the Lancers cut the deficit to 48-46 at the end of the third quarter. Butler scored eight points and Davenport had four more to keep the Redmen in front.

Matney scored eight points in the fourth quarter but Smith had five points to help rally the Lancers.
