The South Point Board of Education has renewed the contract for school superintendent Ken Cook.

On Nov. 13, the board approved a new five-year contract for Cook with a vote of 4-0 with one person absent.

Terry Blake, the chairman of the school board, said Cook’s contract was set to expire in March.

“With the building projects, we thought we’d go ahead and get it set so he could finish up the building projects,” Blake said.

The school system is in the middle of constructing three new buildings, South Point High School, South Point Middle School and Burlington Elementary School.

The high school and the middle school will be moved to the new high school, and then Burlington Elementary School will move into the old high school temporarily while a new school is being built in Burlington.

The board offices will move into the old high school along with Burlington Elementary. When the middle school moves, it will be torn down and a new South Point Elementary will be built at that location.

The high school and middle schools — which will take up about 30 acres of the 84 acres owned by the district at the site — are currently being constructed, but plans are to replace all four schools in the district, with a total price tag of $42 million.

“When you are in a building project, it’s hard to change right in the middle,” Blake said.

Ken Cook became superintendent in 2002. Messages left for Cookat the South Point Board of Education Office were not returned.
